All I Want For Christmas Is New Year’s Day (Hurts)
Hailing from Manchester, England Hurts are Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson. This song is from their Happiness album and although it was released as a single it wasn’t a hit. That’s a pity as the lyrics speak of something rarely covered in Christmas songs, that tend towards being upbeat. Not everybody looks forward to Christmas, some are just hanging on, gritting their teeth to get through their obligations, counting down until New Year’s when a bad twelve months will be behind them. The song points out that there’s a lot of pressure to be “merry” on 25 December (“I’m not supposed to feel this way”) but ultimately speaks of hope for the Christmas to come (“I know that the next one will be different, so much more”).
Fun fact: The original name for the band was Daggers.

The theme for Bestest Song Club December 2015 is: Bestest Modern Christmas Songs.
Criteria: Song must have been recorded no earlier than 1980.
