Breakdance (Irene Cara)
#8 on the US Hot 100
If there’s any one 1980s artist who had superstardom whipped out from beneath them it was Irene Cara. She was already an established actress but after starring in and singing the classic theme song for Fame, then the theme to Flashdance, her pop career looked rosy. She even scored an Oscar for helping co-write that classic Flashdance song. But, in fact, those two tunes and Breakdance were her only US top tens. Cara reports that it was issues with her record company that stalled her career. It is a classic case of what could have been. Fortunately the electric Breakdance is part of what was.
Fun fact: Cara was also a co-writer on this song. She helped write much of her own material, including the classic Hot Lunch Jam from Fame.
The theme for Bestest Song Club November 2015 is: US Top 10 Hits That You Probably Haven’t Heard In Years.
Criteria – Songs reached at least #10 on the US Hot 100 between 1 January 1980 and 31 December 1989 but have since largely been unheard.
