Christmas Lights (Coldplay)
Coldplay aren’t the sort of act you would expect to record a special Christmas record but that’s what makes this song such a treat. This is very much a Christmas song but it’s just as obviously a Coldplay song. “Christmas night, another fight” it begins “Got all kinds of poison in, poison in my blood”. It’s the kind of tormented lyric you expect from this group, though it’s not all bleak. “Up above candles on air flicker, oh they flicker and they float. But I’m up here holding on to all those chandeliers of hope”.
Fun fact: Released only as a single it was most popular in Italy and the Netherlands where it reached #2.

The theme for Bestest Song Club December 2015 is: Bestest Modern Christmas Songs.
Criteria: Song must have been recorded no earlier than 1980.
