Do They Know It’s Christmas (Band Aid)
1984
While it was not the very first “charity record” Do They Know It’s Christmas was, however, the first superstar charity record and kicked off decades of similar efforts. Criticized for being condescending and a weak tune, the song did undoubtedly do what it intended – raise money and awareness. Looking back the song also suffers from sexism (only men sing solo parts) and for a song to benefit Africa it is ironically monochromatic (all the soloists are white). But in its defence the project was thrown together quickly – the writing, recording, production, release and distribution all occurring in a matter of weeks – and everyone’s hearts were definitely in the right place.
Fun fact: Do They Know It’s Christmas has been remade three times and every version has reached #1 in the UK.

The theme for Bestest Song Club December 2015 is: Bestest Modern Christmas Songs.
Criteria: Song must have been recorded no earlier than 1980.
