I Listen To The Bells (Luther Vandross)
The early 1990s were Vandross’ most successful chart time, mainly due to his Power of Love and Songs albums, both of which gave him top 10 pop hits. He released This Is Christmas in 1995 and whereas many festive albums are full of covers this album was mostly Vandross originals, with only three “traditional” songs. Two likely reasons for this are that Vandross himself was a prolific and talented writer and that Songs the year earlier was an album completely composed of covers. I Listen To the Bells is a Motown infused gift that features legend Darlene Love on leads. It was never released as a single to promote This Is Christmas – that honor went to another original from the album, ballad Every Year, Every Christmas.
Fun fact: Co-writing this track is Fonzi Thornton, a long-time Vandross backing vocalist and collaborator.

The theme for Bestest Song Club December 2015 is: Bestest Modern Christmas Songs.
Criteria: Song must have been recorded no earlier than 1980.
