New Song (Howard Jones)
1983
John Howard Jones’ very first single made him an immediate star, reaching #3 in his home UK charts and #27 in the US. He’s said he was working in a factory at the time, doing gigs at night, and wanted to write a song about remaining positive, even in the face of difficulties. He succeeded, the lyrics managing to be both intellectual (for a pop song) yet totally accessible.

This is a song to all of my friends
They take the challenge to their hearts
Challenging preconceived ideas
Saying goodbye to long standing fears

Fun fact: Jones on how his hair looked back then. “I’m absolutely so proud of it I can’t tell you. Do you realize how brave you have to be to walk into a pub with hair like that?”
