They Don’t Know (Tracey Ullman)
1984
#8 on the US Hot 100
Before she hosted the TV show that birthed The Simpsons Tracey Ullman recorded two albums and this was from her first – You Broke My Heart in 17 Places. The song is written by Kirsty MacColl who recorded it originally and although it was an airplay hit for her the physical singles never made the stores due to a strike. Fortunately Ullman’s recording made the song the hit it deserved to be.
Fun fact: That’s Kirsty singing back up, including the song’s memorable ‘bay-bee!’.

The theme for Bestest Song Club November 2015: Top 10 Hits That You Probably Haven’t Heard In Years. Criteria – Songs that reached at least #10 on the US Hot 100 between 1 January 1980 and 31 December 1989 but tend to get overlooked in any “Best of the 1980s” lists and collections.
